Botox and Dysport Q&A

What are Botox® and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are prescription injections that contain a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. When injected into specific areas of the body in the right amounts, the neurotoxin temporarily stops muscle movement or blocks the transmission of nerve signals that move the muscle.

Dermatology Associates of Western Pennsylvania uses BOTOX® Cosmetics and Dysport to temporarily reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles.

What do Botox and Dysport treat?

Botox and Dysport are FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles. These facial lines and wrinkles are called dynamic wrinkles and develop from repeated facial expressions.

When you squint or frown, your facial muscles create grooves that fold your skin. As you get older, collagen production slows, making your skin thin and less resilient. These age-related changes make your skin more susceptible to lines and wrinkles.

Botox and Dysport work by temporarily stopping the muscle movement under the skin that causes the folding. Over time, your skin relaxes, and the lines and wrinkles disappear.

What happens during Botox or Dysport injections?

Your dermatologist at Dermatology Associates of Western Pennsylvania customizes your injection treatment after a consultation. They review the details with you, so you know what to expect.

Typically, this is a quick in-office treatment that causes little to no pain. While you relax in the treatment chair, your board-certified dermatologist cleans your skin with an antiseptic agent. Then, they carefully inject the Botox or Dysport into specific areas of your face.

Depending on your beauty goals, you may need several injections. Treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and you can go back to your usual routine after.

When can I expect to see results from Botox or Dysport?

You may start to see results from your injections within a day or two. However, it takes up to 30 days to see the full effects.

Botox and Dysport injections last 3-4 months. The Dermatology Associates of Western Pennsylvania team recommends you schedule your follow-up treatment when you notice a return of your lines and creases.

Regular Botox or Dysport injections help you retain your youthful look and prevent new lines and wrinkles from forming.
